Four-time state legislator CB Suresh Babu has been sworn in as the new Janata Dal (S) leader in the Karnataka assembly. He replaces Union Industries Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader HD Coomaraswamy, who resigned from his seat after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Mandya constituency in the 2024 general elections.
The party has also appointed two-time state legislator SL Bhojegowda as its leader in the Legislative Council. A lawyer by profession and vice-president of the Bar Council of India, he is the son of SR Lakshmaiah, a former three-time state legislator from Bilur, and brother of former Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council SL Dharme Gowda.
Babu won from Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district in the 2023 Assembly elections, defeating former minister and BJP candidate JC Madhuswami. He entered politics in a by-election in 1997 but lost to Madhuswami. He was elected to the Assembly in 1999, 2008, 2013 and 2023.
