Kendall Jenner’s design team (mother and son, Kathleen and Tommy Clements, and the incomparably talented Waldo Fernandez) wanted to take a risk when designing this kitchen for their superstar client.
There are a lot of nuances to understand and overcome when choosing the color of your kitchen cabinets. Neutral colors aren’t for everyone, and a new kitchen can be quite expensive, so don’t play it safe. It’s often better to go with a color that has decorative impact. Teal, currently experiencing a renaissance, was the ideal choice for Jenner’s kitchen.
Uplifting yet calming, teal creates an interesting contradiction: when added to an interior color scheme, it blurs the lines between blue and green, and equally blurs the line between fun and sophisticated.
“Teal is a very balanced and versatile colour that can shift between blue and green depending on the light, creating a subtle or dramatic space,” says Charlotte Cosby, head of creative at Farrow & Ball. “Its green undertones give a calming effect to the room.”
But why does decorating with teal help lift your mood and calm you at the same time? Valspar Brand Head, Tobias Lewis, has a theory that connects the hue found in nature with the recent global pandemic. “Room color ideas that have biophilic qualities, such as blues and greens, evoke stress-relieving, mood-boosting atmospheres. That’s why teal, a deep cyan-green shade, is perfect for rooms where you want to unwind, like bedrooms and living rooms.”
But that doesn’t mean you can’t use teal in your kitchen. In fact, this busy family space is the perfect place for the stress-relieving color. As we’ve spent more time than usual at home over the past few years, we’ve prioritized comfort and relaxation more than ever before, which has led to a trend toward natural, organic hues in interiors.
After all, we incorporate this shade – not too blue, not too green – into our homes and hearts for the feeling it gives us: character and warmth are key goals for creating a welcoming home.
“Teal is the perfect balance – not too warm or too cold, making it ideal for creating an intimate, cozy atmosphere,” sums up Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Green. “When working with teal, don’t neglect darker shades. When used throughout, dark teal exudes a cozy, cocoon-like texture and brings out the character of a room.”
