Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown has agreed to a contract extension through the 2026-2027 season that will increase his annual salary to $8.5 million, his agent Warren LeGalee told ESPN on Friday night.
Brown, the 2022-2023 NBA Coach of the Year, will receive a $4.5 million raise in his 2024-2025 contract and is under contract for two new seasons worth $8.5 million, Legarey said. Brown has played a key role in helping the Kings become a contender again, going 94-70 over the past two seasons and ending a 16-year streak without a playoff appearance.
Brown and the Kings briefly shelved negotiations, but the two sides were determined to work out a deal to keep Brown with the team, and the deal was reached on Friday night. Brown will lead the Kings to their first Western Conference playoff appearance in 16 years in 2022-23 and led Sacramento to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference last year with a 48-34 record before ultimately losing their opening seven-game series to the Golden State Warriors.
The Kings were the ninth seed this season and beat the Warriors in the play-in tournament before losing to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Brown is the first Kings coach to achieve winning records in his first two seasons with the team since Rick Adelman from 1998-2000, according to ESPN Stats and Information research.
Brown is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year winner, first with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. Brown served as head coach with the Cavaliers for two stints (305-187, 62% win percentage) and also coached one season with the Los Angeles Lakers (42-29, 592% win percentage).
