Former India opener Krishnamachari Srikanth demanded Pakistan’s resignation as T20I captain and slammed Babar Azam after the Green Army’s disastrous defeat on Sunday in the ICC World Cup 2024. Before Babar’s win in chasing the 2009 champions in the final match of the ICC event, Srikanth urged the under- fire batsman to avoid playing in the shortest format of the game.

Last year’s runners-up, Pakistan were early eliminated from Group A of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States and former champions the West Indies. Under Babar’s guidance, Pakistan finished behind arch rivals India and co-hosts the United States in Group A. Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit came before their final Group A match against Ireland. Babar’s team was eliminated from the World Cup after the USA-Ireland match was rained out.

‘I don’t think Babar should play T20 cricket’: Srikanth
talk Star Sports Ahead of Pakistan’s final group match against Ireland, Srikanth was scathing in his criticism of the Pakistan captain. “I don’t think Babar Azam should play T20 cricket. He may be a good/great cricketer in Tests. But frankly, in my opinion, I don’t think he should play T20. I mean, you can’t do this ‘tuk tuk’ all the time in T20 cricket. Talking about statistics, they say 4000 runs – Babar, 4000 runs – Virat Kohli, 4000 runs – Rohit Sharma. His strike rate is only 112-115! What are you talking about?” Srikanth said.
Babar’s heroics help Pakistan beat Ireland
Babar averted another Pakistan batting collapse and remained unbeaten to restore pride against former champions Ireland. Babar scored 32 off 34 balls as Pakistan reached a target of 107 in 18.5 overs. Ireland beat Pakistan at 95 for 7 but Babar revived the Asian giants’ run-chasing. Pakistan captain Babar batted at 94.12.
Babar’s performance in the T20 World Cup
The Pakistan captain hit the game-winning hit against Ireland at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground but only hit two fours. Babar ended the season with 122 runs in four T20 World Cup matches. The former world number one batsman averaged 40.66 for the Green Army in ICC events. Babar overtook Virat Kohli to become the fastest-ever run-scorer in the group stage of an ICC event.
