Kroger and Albertsons merger will see the sale of about a dozen San Diego County stores – NBC 7 San Diego

Kroger and Albertsons on Tuesday announced a list of 579 stores to be sold under the grocers’ proposed mega-merger, including 63 in California.

Most of our California locations are in Southern California.

According to Bloomberg, Kroger’s CEO sent a memo to employees at all affected stores informing them of plans to spin off those stores into C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc., if the merger goes through. All employees are expected to keep their jobs at C&S, the people said.

The merger is being challenged by the Federal Trade Commission, which argues that the proposed $24.6 billion combination could lead to higher food prices due to less market competition and harm workers.

Kroger denies the allegations and maintains that no stores, distribution centers or manufacturing facilities will be closed and that “customers will benefit from lower prices and greater selection” from the merger.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents grocery store workers, issued a statement Tuesday saying it continues to oppose the merger.

“Today’s announcement changes nothing,” the union said. “The merger is not a done deal – far from it. We have been focused on stopping this mega-merger since it was first announced more than 20 months ago because we know it would harm workers, shoppers, suppliers and communities – and it is illegal. The proposed merger was rejected in January and February by the Colorado and Washington State Attorneys General and the Federal Trade Commission, and we applaud their actions. They have held the list of proposed sales publicly released by the companies today for months, but they have not changed their opposition to the proposed merger.”

“These legal challenges to the proposed merger are moving forward with hearings beginning at the end of July and expected to continue through September.”
