We won’t lie: With the rise of trends like cowboy copper and candy brunette, we briefly thought the days of cool-girl blonde might be over. With many celebs opting for darker tones, it seemed like the summer of browns and reds was upon us, too. That was until Joey King debuted a game-changing, trend-changing hue: Playboy Blonde.
Whether or not you’re familiar with the name Dimitris Giannetos, he’s one of Hollywood’s most famous celebrity hairstylists, working with everyone from Megan Fox to George Clooney to Gigi Hadid. Giannetos was also responsible for Joey King’s three hair makeovers in the last month, the latest of which was Playboy Blonde hair. Below, Giannetos explains what Playboy Blonde is, how to get it, and who’s been rocking it all this time.
What is a Playboy Blonde?
When I first saw Joey King’s Playboy Blonde hair, I wasn’t sure why the color was named after Hefner, but from the platinum blonde hue to the dark roots, I knew it was a perfect fit. As Giannetos says, “Playboy blonde is independent, strong, and sexy.” The real difference between Playboy blonde and traditional blonde is the free-spirited vibe that the shadowed roots give off.
“Playboy blondes are big on hair regrowth because it’s the perfect combination of well-done blonde and exuding the type of girl who doesn’t care about maintaining that ‘perfect blonde’ look. Basically, it’s a rebellious blonde.”
How to Get and Keep a Playboy Blonde Hair
One of the hardest parts of dyeing your hair blonde is maintaining it, but as Giannetos says, your hairline is part of the Playboy Blonde look, so you’ll need to worry more about keeping that icy shade bright than tending to your roots. “To dye my hair Playboy Blonde, I always use L’Oréal Paris Le Colour Gloss One Step-In-Shower Toning Hair Gloss in Platinum Pearl ($16). After colouring, I always use Garnier Fructis Hair Filler and then Moroccanoil Purple Treatment ($38) to get rid of any yellowing.”
