Serie Jones injury: What you need to know
Jones injured her knee on the vault during a pre-meet warm-up on Friday night and missed all events except the uneven bars. USA Gymnastics announced that she will sit out Sunday’s competition after a re-examination on Saturday.
Jones, who has won all-around medals at the past two world championships, was almost as much of a favorite as Simone Biles to make the Paris team. She competed in the qualifying rounds with a shoulder injury that kept her out of the national championships earlier this month, but her coach, Sarah Korngold, said she was ready to compete.
But during warm-ups on Friday, Jones landed on the vault and collapsed to the mat, clutching her right foot. Biles rushed over to check on her, and Jones sat on the podium for a few minutes before being helped backstage by Korngold and medical staff.
Kayla DiCello injury: What you need to know
Kayla DiCello injured her Achilles tendon during the first round of vault on Friday. She left the venue in a wheelchair and USA Gymnastics announced she would be ruled out for the rest of the night.
Jordan Chiles: What you need to know
The Tokyo Olympian showed his mettle at the US Classic with solid performances in all four events, and while Chiles may not be able to beat the Americans by a ton in any one event, he’s not leaving any gaps either.
“I think I realized I had potential,” Chiles said of the difference between this season and last, when she struggled to make the transition from NCAA to elite level.
“A lot of times when you say you want to do something, there are so many eyes and expectations and you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Childs added. “When you put that aside, you realize, ‘I’m just going to go ahead and be who I’m supposed to be and put in the effort that’s needed at every practice.'”
Suni Lee Kidney Disease: How her health journey changed her perspective
Suni Lee was in such good form that she was in the five-man U.S. team for the Paris Olympics. She placed fourth at the U.S. championships in early June and has since upped her game on the uneven bars and floor exercise. But her life changed 15 months ago when she developed kidney disease and found herself too hydrated to grip the ball. Some days she couldn’t even get out of bed.
Lee said a phone call she received on Jan. 4 (details of which she wishes to withhold) was a turning point. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m going to go back to the gym tomorrow and feel the best I’ve ever felt.’ That was the day I thought, ‘Yes, this is what I want, so I’m going to give it my all,'” she said. Read the full story of Suni Lee’s health journey by Nancy Armour.

Did Simone Biles make the Olympic team?
Simone Biles’ place in Paris is all but certain, but the official announcement will be made after the final session of the Olympic Trials tonight. Widely considered the greatest gymnast of all time, Biles will be competing in her third Summer Olympics. She won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games, and a silver and one bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Simone Biles Yurchenko double pike
Simone Biles received a standing ovation from the fans on Friday when she performed a Yurchenko double pike. No matter how many times you do it, it’s always amazing to see in person. Biles reaches great heights on the vault, and when she flips, the force ripples through her body. She had to take a step to control the landing, but it’s a small thing. The judges clearly agreed, awarding her 15.975 points, with 9.75 points for execution.
How many Olympics has Simone Biles competed in?
Biles has competed in two Summer Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. But in 2021, she was only able to compete in some of her scheduled events after experiencing a “twisty” jump in the air, a condition in which a skater loses track of their position and puts their safety at risk.
How many Olympic medals has Simone Biles won?
Simone Biles has won four Olympic gold medals, all of which came at the Rio Games in 2016. She led the “Final Five” to a team gold medal, won an individual all-around gold medal, and won two of her four individual events, floor exercise and vault. She has also won a silver medal (2021 team event) and two Olympic bronze medals on balance beam in 2016 and 2021.
When do the Summer Olympics start?
The 2024 Paris Olympics will kick off with the Opening Ceremony on July 26. Artistic gymnastics will begin with the men’s qualifying rounds on July 27. The women’s qualifying rounds are on July 28.
Who is Simone Biles married to?
Simone Biles is currently married to NFL player Jonathan Owens, a safety for the Chicago Bears. They celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Simone Biles is a sure thing to compete in the Olympics, but with an injury, who will be competing with her?
Call it carnage, mayhem or just plain bad luck, the four women accompanying Simone Biles to the Paris Olympics may be the ones who were healthy enough to make the trip.
In the space of 30 minutes on Friday night, Serie Jones was ruled out of one event with a knee injury and Kayla DiCello was ruled out with an Achilles injury, while Skye Blakely, a member of the U.S. team that has won gold medals at the past two world championships, was hobbling across the floor on crutches after rupturing her Achilles during training two days earlier.
What makes this so tragic is that the U.S. women’s team seemed on track to be in very solid, if not set, shape after the U.S. Championships four weeks ago, and now it’s all gone.
Nancy Armour explains what the injuries mean for the U.S. team.
