After six weeks of marathon voting in seven phases, the results of the 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections were announced yesterday. The BJP-led NDA won 292 seats, beating the opposition coalition ‘Indiana’, which won 232. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take oath on Saturday evening (June 8).
The NDA and the Indian Union are due to hold a crucial meeting today to discuss the way forward.The tussle between the BJP and the Indian Union reflects a wider ideological struggle.
Prime Minister Modi called the poll results “a victory for the world’s largest democracy.”
The BJP had set an ambitious target of 370 seats (400+ including its NDA partners) but was thwarted by a bloc led by the opposition coalition, the Indian National Congress Party. The opposition defied exit polls and delivered a remarkable performance, drastically reducing the BJP’s lead in key states, winning 232 seats.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday unanimously elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi as leader of the ruling coalition and passed a resolution underlining his government’s commitment to serve the poor, women, youth, farmers and underprivileged sections of society.
The two met at Modi’s residence here a day after the NDA won a majority of seats in India’s Lok Sabha elections, paving the way for the ruling alliance to be sworn in for a third consecutive term, the first time such a coalition has done so since 1962.
The President moved to dissolve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 17th Lok Sabha and form the 18th Lok Sabha. The NDA led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 293 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the opposition United India won 232 seats.
According to NDTV sources, Nitish Kumar and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu submitted the letter of support at an NDA meeting at PM Modi’s residence.The NDA alliance will today assert its right to form the government and the Prime Minister and Amit Shah are expected to meet President Draupadi Murmu in this regard.
Lutyens’ Delhi is hosting the crucial Indian Union Congress. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule have arrived in Delhi.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav arrived in Delhi for the Block India conference. Yadav was elected from Kannauj constituency in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party surprised the BJP-led NDA by winning 37 seats on its own. The Indian National Congress increased its tally in the state to eight, while the BJP, pinning its hopes on Uttar Pradesh, won 33 seats.
Senior TDP leader and former Rajya Sabha member K Ravindra Kumar told NDTV that his party is with the NDA and is a reliable partner.
He said preliminary discussions would be held at the NDA meeting today after which Chandrababu Naidu would hold discussions with party leaders.
“We have not put forward any demands to the BJP leadership. Our support is without conditions,” he added.
Leaders of the Indian Union arrived in the national capital for a major meeting a day after the results of the Lok Sabha elections were announced, in which the Indian Union won 232 seats, defeating the BJP-led NDA with 293 seats, with 18 seats won by other parties.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has arrived in Delhi, while Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, has also arrived in Delhi.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is in Delhi. The Bihar Chief Minister and Yadav flew to Delhi on the same flight, while Nitish Kumar is with the NDA, which has emerged as a kingmaker in the elections after its party, the JDU, won 12 seats.
