Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar along with two election commissioners on Thursday presented details of newly elected Lok Sabha members to President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.
The meeting is part of the process for the formation of the next or the 18th Lok Sabha.
CEC Rajiv Kumar, accompanied by Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, met the President at 4.30 pm, a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.
“A copy of the notification issued by the Election Commission of India, in terms of Section 73 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951, containing the names of the members elected to the House of the People following the General Elections to the 18th Lok Sabha, was submitted by them to the President,” it said.
The section mandates “publication of results of general elections to the House of the People and the State Legislative Assemblies and of names of persons nominated thereto”.
The model code of conduct that came into force on March 16 with the announcement of the Lok Sabha election has been lifted.
In a communication to the Union Cabinet Secretary and state chief secretaries, the Election Commission said as results of Lok Sabha elections and assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, along with some assembly bypolls have been declared, “model code of conduct has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect”.
The model code of conduct is a set of conventions agreed upon by all stakeholders and imposed during elections. Its objective is to keep the campaigning, polling and counting process orderly, clean and peaceful and check any abuse of state machinery and finances by the party in power.
Chirag Paswan, whose party has pulled off a stunner by winning all five Lok Sabha seats it contested, told NDTV today that he is in favour of a review of the Agnipath scheme and a nationwide caste census. Mr Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is the second NDA ally after JDU to push for the Agnipath review and caste census.
Speaking to NDTV in an exclusive interview, the 41-year-old said the credit for his party’s success goes to the people of Bihar. “I have gone through a bad phase for the longest period of my life, but the one thing that kept me going is that I was with the people of my state. I had that belief in myself. I had the blessings of my father,” he said.

Tamil Nadu : A DMK Sweep, BJP’s Annamalai Comes Up Short
In Tamil Nadu, it is clear that state BJP president Annamalai’s campaign and the party’s overwhelming focus on breaching the Dravidian fortress has still failed to win seats.
The DMK-led INDIA alliance in the state has firmly held on to its bastion and won an absolute sweep – 39 of 39, one more than the 38 it won last time. Vote shares reflect that the AIADMK is clearly the second largest party, but the BJP too has a double-digit vote share at 11 per cent, placing third, ahead of the Congress’s 10 per cent. But the Congress contested fewer seats than the BJP, so their vote shares may not be comparable.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should utilise his position as “kingmaker” in the NDA to ensure special status for Bihar.
“NDA has numbers but we want the government which will be formed to take care of Bihar and ensure that it gets special status. It is a good opportunity for Nitish Kumar if he is the kingmaker, he should make sure that Bihar gets a special status and conduct caste-based census in the entire country,” Mr Yadav told news agency ANI, adding that for the first time, PM Modi’s “magic was finished” and he would be dependent on NDA allies to form a government.
Four women candidates, all belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party, emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha elections in Odisha.
A total of 29 candidates contested in the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha of whom four won and five came second in the polls.
Aparajita Sarangi, a former IAS officer and BJP candidate, retained her Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat for the second time by defeating her nearest BJD rival Manmath Kumar Routray by 35,152 votes.
Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo of the erstwhile Royal family of Patna in Bolangir district won the Bolangir Lok Sabha seat by defeating her nearest BJD rival Surendra Singh Bhoi by 1,32,664 votes.
BJP candidate Malvika Devi of the erstwhile Royal family of Kalahandi district won the Kalahandi Lok Sabha seat by 1,33,813 votes. She defeated BJD’s Lambodar Nial.
In the Aska Lok Sabha constituency in Ganjam district, BJP’s Anita Subhadarshini won by defeating her nearest BJD rival Ranjita Sahu by 99,974 votes.
Among the states that handed over a 100 per cent result to the BJP in this election is Madhya Pradesh, where it swept all 29 seats. The Congress, which improved its overall tally this time, was wiped out in the heartland state, also losing the one seat it won in the 2019 polls.
The defeat on two seats in Madhya Pradesh will sting the Congress the most — these are Chhindwara and Ratlam. Congress veteran Kamal Nath, who won the seat a record nine times since the 1980s, failed to ensure his son Nakul Nath’s victory. In Ratlam, it was the other way round. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Kantilal Bhuria lost despite his son being MLA in one of the Assembly segments in the Lok Sabha constituency.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should utilise his position as “kingmaker” in the NDA to ensure special status for Bihar.
On Wednesday, photos of the RJD leader sitting with his former boss on a flight to Delhi went viral on social media. Both NDA and INDIA partners flew to the national capital to hold meetings after the Lok Sabha Election results failed to give a majority to the BJP.
The Opposition INDIA bloc, for now, will sit in the opposition benches, even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are “subverting the will of the people,” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said today. But there was a caveat. “The INDIA bloc will continue to resist the fascist rule… We will take appropriate steps at the appropriate time to realise the people’s desire not to be ruled by the BJP,” he added, reading out a statement adopted by all the alliance partners after a strategy session at his Delhi residence.
