Elections 2024 Live News: PM’s back-to-back rallies in Uttar Pradesh
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a series of rallies in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, as announced by the party spokesman.
- On Thursday, he will hold rallies in Jaunpur and Azamgarh. The Jaunpur rally will also cover the Machhlishahr parliamentary seat, while the Azamgarh rally aims to strengthen the party’s position in both Azamgarh and Lalganj constituencies.
- Notably, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP lost Azamgarh, Lalganj, and Jaunpur to the SP-BSP alliance, winning only Machhlishahr by a narrow margin of 181 votes. In Machhlishahr, BJP candidate Bholanath Saroj defeated BSP’s Tribhuwan Ram. Saroj is contesting again, facing SP’s Priya Saroj, daughter of former MP Tufani Saroj.
- In Jaunpur, the 2019 election saw BSP’s Shyam Singh Yadav defeat BJP’s Krishna Pratap Singh by approximately 81,000 votes. The PM’s rally will be held in Jaunpur Sadar Assembly segment. BSP initially nominated Dhananjay Singh’s wife Srikala but later replaced her with Shyam Singh Yadav, who will compete against BJP’s Kripa Shanker Singh and SP’s Babu Singh Kushwaha.
- Azamgarh was previously held by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who vacated the seat for the 2022 UP Assembly polls. In the subsequent by-elections, BJP’s Dinesh Lal Nirahua defeated SP’s Dharmendra Yadav. They will face off again in this Yadav and Muslim-dominated constituency. The Azamgarh rally will be in the Nizamabad Assembly segment, part of Lalganj, where BSP’s Sangeeta Azad won in 2019. Azad switched to BJP but did not secure a ticket; BJP has nominated Neelam Sonkar, who will contest against SP’s Daroga Saroj.
- On May 17, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to hold rallies in Barabanki and Mohanlalganj to bolster the party’s presence in the Avadh region. Official sources indicated that the Prime Minister might stay overnight in Lucknow on Thursday, with preparations already in progress.
