The New York Yankees created bobblehead dolls for some of their most beloved (fictional) front office employees, and let’s just say they were a big hit with fans.
When George Costanza bobbleheads became available at Yankee Stadium on Friday, thousands of fans lined up to get their hands on a miniature version of the popular “Seinfeld” character. The competitive spirit ran high, as only the first 18,000 of the stadium’s 46,537 capacity fans were eligible to get one.
You can see the lines for yourself here:
Working for the Yankees became an important part of George’s character in the show’s later seasons, with the bombastic owner George Steinbrenner “character” played by series co-creator Larry David. It didn’t always work out well for George, but it was always good TV.
Unfortunately, the “Seinfeld” themed night should have been a warning to fans that the night might end on an unsatisfactory note.
The Yankees entered Friday’s game having lost 13 of their previous 17 games, but were looking to bounce back after leading 3-1 after eight innings against the rival Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, Red Sox designated hitter Masahisa Yoshida wiped out the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.
The game went into extra innings, with Sedan Rafaela giving the Red Sox the lead in the top of the 10th with a two-run homer. The Yankees failed to score in the bottom of the inning, with Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo and Oswaldo Cabrera all getting out on a leadoff single by Juan Soto.
This won’t help Yankees manager Aaron Boone, considering he had already addressed the criticism before the game.
