Los Angeles Sparks rookie center Cameron Brink has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The Sparks announced the injury on Wednesday. Brink injured his knee in Tuesday night’s game against the Connecticut Sun and underwent further evaluation on Wednesday.
Brink was injured while driving to the basket in the first quarter. His knee buckled and he collapsed to the floor in pain. He was helped to his feet by teammates but was eventually carried off the floor by trainers.
The news comes as a major blow to Brink, the Sparks, the WNBA and the U.S. national team. Brink joined the Sparks as the No. 2 draft pick out of Stanford and has become one of the brightest young stars in the WNBA.
In 15 games, she is averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. A month into her career, she is already one of the most popular players in the league, both on the court and on social media.
Brink was recently selected as a member of the U.S. 3×3 basketball team for the Paris Olympics. The U.S. team must choose a replacement player before the games begin on July 26.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
