Makeup trends: Is the blush boom coming to an end?

Over the past two years, blush has been one of the most popular makeup products among social media users, with numerous tips and trends devised to help people get the most out of this makeup staple. This can be seen in the “glazed blush” trend, which combines liquid blush, powder blush and highlighter, the foolproof “L-shape” blush hack, and the “sunset blush” effect, which is set to be one of the top trends for Summer 2024, along with “island girl makeup.”

Always more?

Simply put, gone are the dollops of powder blush for a subtle, healthy-looking glow, replaced by more pigmented liquid textures, vibrant colours and the use of multiple products layered on for a more visible effect.

The 2023 white and purple blush trends have seen some social media users replacing powder-based products with lipstick to achieve a glowing complexion. A blush trend that’s been making waves lately is the “double blush” or “blush combo,” which involves using not one but two types of blush (a liquid blush and a powder blush) for increased effect.

Opinions are divided on TikTok, but the majority of users seem to prefer lighter shades for liquid blush and softer shades for powder.

But these tricks and hacks, which encourage beauty enthusiasts to apply extra makeup to their cheekbones, are starting to come under fire.

And now comes “blush blindness”

And now the critics Hashtag #blushblindnessPeople who apply too much blush without realizing it’s too thick are known as “blush blind,” and there have already been numerous videos on TikTok mocking and criticizing this obsession with blush.

The hashtag appears beneath a number of posts poking fun at the blush obsession, with captions like “I’m tanning” and “Tomato mode activated,” along with videos of girls with bright pink or red cheeks.

The targets of ridicule are often trends that are coming to an end: recent examples include extremely thin, then bleached, then thick eyebrows (“brow blind”), an extremely contoured complexion (“contour blind”), or extremely long and voluminous eyelashes (“lash blind”).
