The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Shidler College of Business celebrated its 63rd Business Night at the Sheraton Waikiki on May 2, welcoming nearly 500 students and business professionals.
Celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary, this signature event is a night of mentorship and networking, professional development, and recognition of deserving students for academic achievement. With support from alumni and the Hawaii business community, 51 sponsored awards totaling more than $96,000 were presented to undergraduate and graduate students.
This event is student-hosted, pairs Shidler students with professional business mentors with experience related to their major, and includes time for networking, followed by dinner and award presentations. Tertia Freese (BBA ’78), a Shidler alumnus and executive director of the Clarence TC Her Chin Foundation, served as the keynote speaker and spoke about her career after college. And she talked about her leadership, her connections with her peers and colleagues, and the importance of serving the community.
“This year’s theme, “Future-Proofing Your Business: Ray, Your Path to Success,” comes from a sentiment expressed by alumnus Jay H. Shidler (BBA ’68) in a speech at the university last year. ” said Reese Kisaba, a senior at Shidler. He received the Dean’s Spirit Award as executive director of the Student Council. “He described Shidler as a starting point, a place we all come from and a place we can come back to, no matter where we end up or what happens in life.”
