All roads lead to New York this weekend as neighbours and arch rivals Pakistan and India face off in what International Cricket Council CEO Geoff Allardice described as “one of the greatest international sporting rivalries in the history of sport”.
Sunday’s match will be the first between the two neighbours in the United States, which is co-hosting the T20 World Cup for the first time. A new 34,000-seat modular stadium was built in Nassau County, Long Island, New York, specifically for the T20 World Cup 2024. (The tournament kicked off in Dallas last Saturday, with the US winning the opening match between the US and Canada.)
India and Pakistan have each played just one match since the start of the tournament, with India beating Ireland in their opening match on Wednesday while Pakistan suffered their first upset of the tournament when they lost to the United States on Thursday.
Both countries have won the T20 World Cup once each – India won the inaugural tournament in 2007 and Pakistan in 2009.
“Our Super Bowl”
“Americans who are familiar with this tournament should know that the Pakistan-India match is like the Super Bowl for us,” tournament ambassador and former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi wrote in an ICC column. “I loved playing against India and truly believe it is the greatest rivalry in sports.”
Afridi likened the India-Pakistan rivalry to that between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, writing, “Against India, it’s all about how you handle the pressure. Both teams are extremely talented, it’s just a matter of putting it to good use on game day.”
