How futsal shaped Kilman
Wolves defender Max Kilman is not the first player to move from non-league to the Premier League, but there is an unexpected side to his story – he is an England futsal international.
Futsal is a form of football with five players on each side, but it is not the five-a-side system we know: there are no walls, kick-ins are used instead, and back-passing is restricted. Futsal is particularly popular in Brazil, the world’s second-ranked country, and Spain, where the game has traditionally been used as a development vehicle for young footballers.
Kilman’s own path was a little different, explains England futsal manager Michael Skbarra: “Max didn’t play futsal in a football environment, he played futsal in a futsal environment,” he says. Sky Sports“So he was coming out of the professional soccer system and into the futsal system coached by a futsal coach.
“His journey is quite unique in the UK.”
