Kylian Mbappe broke his nose in France’s opening match of Euro 2024 but will not require immediate surgery.
The French Football Federation said it would produce a mask for the captain, but it is not yet clear whether he will take part in Friday’s match against the Netherlands.
The 25-year-old forward was forced off during Monday’s 1-0 win over Austria after slamming his face into the shoulder of opposing player Kevin Danso on the follow-through from an aerial tackle.
He was taken to hospital in Düsseldorf where a fracture was confirmed.
“He has returned to the France team’s base camp,” the FFF said in a statement.
“He will not undergo immediate surgery but will undergo treatment over the next few days.”
After the collision, France tried to replace Mbappe with Olivier Giroud, but the substitution was not made and play resumed.
Mbappe returned to the pitch without permission and sat down before being substituted, receiving a yellow card.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, manager Didier Deschamps said the No.10 was “not in good condition”, adding that he had “suffered a bad blow to the nose”.
“It needs to be investigated but it seems quite complicated. It’s very unfortunate for us. He didn’t get off lightly.”
Mbappe, who has scored 47 goals in 80 appearances for France, will be vital to the team’s hopes of winning a third European championship.
He contributed to France’s only goal, his cross being headed into the goal by Max Vover.
Mbappe, who is yet to score at the Euros to add to his 12 goals at the World Cup, is set to move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid this summer.
Deschamps was asked if he could miss the team’s next match against the Netherlands on Friday.
“I don’t want to make hypotheticals, but a French team with Kylian will always be stronger with him there,” he said.
“If the news does not go in this direction, we will have to fight without him.”
