All the usual problems faced by Memphis-area business owners were featured prominently, including trespassing, burglary, and petty theft.

Shelby County, Tennessee —

A Shelby County business owner directly addressed concerns about the crime to Memphis police at White Station on Thursday.

Businesses in the Memphis area are plagued by break-ins, burglaries and petty thefts.

MPD suggested deterrent measures such as installing more cameras, installing guard dogs, adding lighting and daily cash deposits to make businesses less vulnerable.

Other advice included investing in more advanced technology, such as bulletproof glass.

“Every time I look around, I see plastic on my windows and cars, or I see plastic on my house. There’s been a lot of break-in issues lately. ” said forum participant Patrick Blade.

Insurance expert Vinny Standard said the issue extends beyond his insurance practice to his church, and he was grateful for the opportunity to learn more at the event.

“We’re definitely dealing with car break-ins and people stealing cars from churches right now, so that’s a different thing. So this is helpful. [I] I learned how to stay safe,” Standard said.

“Education gives you the power to do what you want to do. [can] within the means of minimizing damage,” MPD CIO Montgomery said.
