Many viral trends come and go on social media. However, only a few make a big impact and spark a long-lasting debate. Recently, the question “Man or Bear?” has become one of the topics that has sparked a series of debates on the Internet. While women and even some men claim that bears are less dangerous than men, others disagree. Tarot enthusiast and devil worshipper Jobe Fortuna, known on TikTok as @bookofjobe666, shared his views on TikTok and women were very supportive of him.

Fortuna made the video in response to another content creator, Jonathan Buchanan (@john_cannon_), in a “men or bears” debate. “But you’re acting like men are scarier than bears. You don’t have enough time to watch nature documentaries,” Buchanan criticized. While agreeing with Buchanan’s opinion, Fortuna listed several reasons why women are justified in choosing bears. “There are no women’s shelters for women attacked by bears. There are no support groups for women attacked by bears,” Fortuna said. He implied that women who are attacked or abused by men, not bears, need psychological support. And he stressed that mothers often teach their daughters to protect themselves from men, not bears.

Fortuna emphasized that women have to go out in groups because they are afraid of men, not bears. When walking home late at night, women are not afraid of bears attacking them, but of men attacking them. “Women are not worried about bears following them home. Women are not worried about bears harassing them at work. Women are not worried about bears putting drugs in their drinks,” Fortuna said. “Do I need to go on any further?” he asked sarcastically. By stating the horrific realities women face every day, Fortuna pointed out that it is natural for women to fear men more than bears.
Like Buchanan, many others thought the “man or bear” trend was misogynistic. Several people who supported Buchanan’s views debated in the comments section. “The question ignores that it means women are just as exposed to bears as men. There are no support groups for bears, but only because bears have killed them,” @stuartwhunter said. “You’re a man and you think a woman is safer in a room with a bear than with you? You seem to be speaking from experience,” @gruffthecat criticized.

But overwhelming support, especially from women, flooded Fortuna. Many more added to his list. “The best and saddest response to this is ‘getting killed by a bear would be the worst,'” @tooksbear noted. “I live where there are bears, cougars and coyotes and I’m not worried about them when I go out hiking. What I’m worried about is finding a man alone,” @craycraycristen added. “I never once check to see if there’s a bear in the back seat before getting in my van,” @erinoftwins123 commented. “Thank you! We need more male voices to recognize this,” @justcallmekimbo said.
