Meta has launched its artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI, in Urdu for users in Pakistan, as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s digital transformation, the company announced on Monday.

The announcement was made at the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT). The company also unveiled experimental programmes for AI education and government digital transformation.

“These initiatives aim to accelerate the process of digital transformation in the country,” Meta said in a statement. “Pakistani users will now be able to interact with Meta AI not only in English but also in Urdu.”

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the development aligns with the Prime Minister’s “Digital Nation Vision”.

“Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen,” she said. “Our partnership with Meta promotes AI education, digital transformation, and innovation within government and educational institutions. The inclusion of Urdu in Meta AI ensures that no one is left behind in this digital journey.”

Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, Sarim Aziz, said the company aims to support the public sector and academia in adopting AI.

He added: “We are delighted that Meta AI is now available in Urdu, giving the local community new opportunities to connect with technology in their own language”.

Meta also launched a localised version of its guide, Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama, created with Deloitte and supported by MoITT. The document outlines how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can enhance government operations, improve public services, and strengthen data sovereignty.

The company further announced the AI Literacy Programme in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT, and atomcamp. Under the programme, 350 non-computer science university teachers across Pakistan will receive basic AI training to prepare students for emerging digital challenges.

Meta also introduced the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025 initiative, which aims to provide public institutions with access to Meta’s technologies and global best practices. The programme will bring together experts from the public and private sectors to share strategies for effective digital transformation.
