These are classified into seven different groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding.
Dogs first compete among their breeds to choose a Best of Breed or Best of Variety champion. Judges will select the winner that most closely adheres to breed standards created and maintained by the National Breed Club and then approved by the AKC.
Once all Best of Breed champions are crowned, they compete against other breeds in their respective groups. Group judges then evaluate all the various Best of Breed his champions to determine his four placings, with only the group winners advancing to Best in Show judging.
All seven group winners will advance, and the Best in Show judges will evaluate the group winners to determine the Reserve Best in Show and Best in Show.
