Chisholm has been with the Marlins since making his MLB debut in 2020. The 26-year-old Bahamas native, who primarily plays second base and center field and has good speed and power, has been a solid, if inconsistent, contributor for Miami. So far this season, he is batting .249 with 13 home runs and 22 stolen bases. He is under contract through 2026.
Chisholm has always displayed some enticing offensive skills and was named an All-Star once in his career in 2022. That season, he hit a career-high .248 with 14 home runs, but played in just 60 games due to a back injury.
He’s having the healthiest season of his career so far this year, striking out less and walking more, but he’s still chasing a lot and struggling to consistently get the ball up in the air at an optimal angle.
The Yankees started the 2024 season strong but have struggled recently and currently sit two games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. The Yankees are expected to be aggressive in bolstering their depth ahead of the trade deadline on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
The Marlins are last in the National League East with a 38-66 record, but are expected to sell the most players at the deadline.
How does Chisholm fit in with the Yankees?
For a Yankees team in dire straits (11-23), the offensive additions would be a welcome drop of water in the desert. And while Chisholm has only been a league-average hitter this season, that’s something a Yankees lineup desperately needs as they search for answers. How Chisholm fits defensively is a complicated question, but his hitting should provide an immediate spark.
