PUNE: The BJP’s announcement of candidates for the state assembly polls is likely to ease tensions between the BJP and the NCP over seat allocation for the upcoming state assembly polls in the state. Three of the five candidates announced by the party on Monday were contesting the state assembly elections from constituencies where Ajit Pawar-led NCP has sitting MLAs. The three candidates vying for nomination for the state assembly elections are Pankaja Munde from Beed, Yogesh Tillekar from Hadapsar and Amit Goelke from Pimpri. NCP’s Dhananjay Munde is the sitting MLA from Beed while Chetan Tupe and Anna Bansod are MLAs from Hadapsar and Pimpri constituencies in Pune respectively. Political observers said the party’s decision to nominate these individuals indicates that the NCP will remain in the Mahayuti alliance in the state assembly elections too. Political analyst Abhay Deshpande said, “OBCs are the core voters of the BJP and they were unhappy with the recent protests by Lakshman Haque, which forced the BJP to take this step. Moreover, there was a demand since 2019 to bring Pankaja Munde back into politics.” Four of the five candidates announced by the BJP belong to the OBC community. Amit Goelke, who was preparing to contest the state assembly elections from Pimpri, said, “No political party in Maharashtra has nominated anyone from the Matang community to the Legislative Assembly or Rajya Sabha so far and I am the first person from the community to be nominated by the BJP.” Yogesh Tillekar is also gearing up for Hadapsar assembly constituency, where NCP’s Chetan Tupe is the incumbent state assembly member.
