MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — He played for the Nabco Park Vikings, Minnesota Vikings, Murphy Panthers and Carolina Panthers. And now Capt. Munnerlyn is being inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame.
Mannerlyn is well known on the Murphy High School campus as a state football player and track and field star.
At the University of South Carolina, Munnerlin flourished as a kick returner and defensive back under coach Steve Spurrier. He intercepted five passes in his three-year career and was named All-SEC in his second season.
A seventh-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2009, Munnerlyn quickly established himself as a big-time NFL player.
In his first five years with the Panthers, he intercepted seven passes and returned five for touchdowns.
Munnerlin then played three years with the Minnesota Vikings and added another touchdown to his resume. He returned to Carolina in 2017 where he spent the final two years of his career.
In 10 seasons in the NFL, Munnarin missed just six games and appeared in 154 of 160 regular season games. Only his six from the Mobile Baldwin area have appeared in more NFL games than “The Captain.”
Munnarin will be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 30th at the Mitchell Center. Other inductees are Kelly Ogden Hillier, Joe Gottfried, Pat White and the late Carvel “Bama” Lowell.
The introductory dinner will be held in conjunction with the First Light Community (formerly L’Arche) Football Preview. Tickets can be purchased online.
