Women aren’t the only ones who seek cosmetic surgery.

Although it isn’t talked about much, in recent years men have been more likely than ever to seek out cosmetic surgery.
“Male cosmetic surgery isn’t often discussed in public, but statistics show the number of people seeking cosmetic surgery is skyrocketing, and as a plastic surgeon I’ve seen it first-hand. In 2022 alone, 1.5 million men underwent cosmetic surgery, and that number continues to grow. by “The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS),” Costa told The Blast exclusively.
“When it comes to medical spa services, practitioners have seen a staggering 253% increase in male patients from 2019 to 2022.”
Costa said the two most popular minimally invasive procedures are neurotoxins or “brotox” and jawline fillers.

“It’s no coincidence that selfies, dating apps and video conference calls all became part of our social and work lives at the same time,” he said.

Dr. Costa introduces popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men

Costa said there are several cosmetic procedures that are the most popular for men.
“Liposuction has historically been a popular procedure for men and maintains its place as one of the most requested procedures by men, helping to remove stubborn fat from areas such as the abdomen, chest and flanks, resulting in a leaner, more toned figure,” he explained.
“Rhinoplasty, commonly known as ‘nose surgery’, is also a very popular procedure for men and has always been. The aim of this procedure is usually to reduce the size and overall appearance of the nose, making it more aesthetically pleasing.”
Rhinoplasty is also considered a functional procedure as it can improve breathing and sinus problems.

Another popular option, and the most popular surgery so far this year, is gynecomastia (also known as breast reduction), which has become “highly visible” and popular over the past few years.
“In the last few years, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has definitely increased in popularity among men,” Costa says. “The procedure helps correct sagging eyelids and remove under-eye baggage, resulting in a more woke, youthful appearance.”

Things you should know and misconceptions about cosmetic surgery
Like most things, there are some huge misconceptions about cosmetic surgery, especially when it comes to men.
“There’s a widespread misconception that cosmetic surgery is just for women, or that men who undergo such procedures are vain or somehow less masculine,” Costa told The Blast.
“The reality is that there are many reasons why men seek these procedures, and sometimes they are functional. But a man’s desire to boost his self-confidence, be more competitive in the workplace, or simply look better is nothing to be ashamed of or taboo about.”
Costa also said the aim of cosmetic surgery should be to “enhance natural beauty”, rather than to look like a totally different person.
Cosmetic surgery was once considered taboo for men.

For a long time, cosmetic surgery has been taboo for men but not women, and Costa said this was due to “traditional gender roles”.
“Traditional gender roles dictate that men should value being more hardworking and rugged,” he said. “Men are traditionally expected to prioritise traits like strength and stoicism over beauty, so for traditional men, seeking cosmetic surgery feels unmanly and vain.”
But for women, it’s a bit different. Historically, women have faced high societal expectations to remain young and beautiful.

“Unfortunately, we live in a society where a woman’s looks and youth are often linked to her self-worth. Being perceived as physically attractive as a woman brings with it more opportunities. This is sometimes called ‘beauty privilege,'” he said.
“Additionally, for decades the beauty industry has targeted women with Photoshopped images of them looking beautiful and peddled products that promise to make them look more attractive. As a result of these high expectations and marketing strategies, it seems entirely reasonable that women would seek out cosmetic surgery to keep up with these societal standards.”
A “Daddy Body” transformation is on par with a “Mommy Body” transformation

Most people have heard of the term “Mommy Makeover” – its male equivalent is the “Dad Body” Makeover, which is becoming increasingly popular.
“The term ‘dad body’ describes a body that is somewhat toned but not super skinny or muscular. Think of a man with a little extra fat around the midsection and a nice softness to him,” Costa explained.
“The term refers to fathers, and is typically associated with men who balance an active life with the laid back lifestyle of a family man.”
This procedure usually involves liposuction and sometimes gynecomastia surgery to tighten and tone the chest.
