Patrick Bertoletti won the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest for the first time in his career by eating 58 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, a new personal best for Bertoletti, who returned in 2022 after a 10-year absence from the competition. Jeffrey Esper came in second with 53 hot dogs and buns.

Miki Sudo dominated the competition, winning the women’s division for the 10th time with 51 hot dogs and buns, setting a new women’s world record.

This year’s Coney Island Fourth of July event was not attended by 16-time champion Joey Chestnut, who sat out the event due to a contractual dispute.

Instead, Chesnut competed in his own event, the Fort Bliss Meet and Greet, held in El Paso, Texas. In the five-minute competition, Chesnut easily out-eat four U.S. soldiers combined, downing 57 hot dogs and buns compared to the competitors’ 49. Notably, Chesnut’s total was only one hot dog behind Bertoletti’s, despite competing in half the time.

Here’s what the hot dog eating contest looks like:

JoeyWatch: Joey Chestnut nearly beats today’s Nathan’s champion…in half the time

Chestnut’s 57 hot dogs were just one behind today’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest winner, Pat Bertoletti, who finished with 58. Even more remarkable is that Chestnut finished his hot dogs in half the time, finishing them in just five minutes compared to Bertoletti’s 10.

Even if he didn’t top the total score, Chestnut’s point is valid: He’s still the greatest player in the sport, suspension or not.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 2:51 PM PDT

The contest also has a counter-offer: for every hot dog consumed (by both parties, apparently), Impossible (the company behind the Impossible Burger) will donate $1,000 to Operation Homefront, a notable move considering Joey was banned from Nathan’s due to his affiliation with Impossible.

With a total of 106 franks, Impossible will donate $106,000, which is apparently more than they were expecting: An Impossible rep said they accidentally wrote the wrong amount ($100,000) on the giant check, which is a testament to the sheer number of franks Joey and his competitors processed today.

JoeyWatch: Joey Chestnut easily beats the competition

Joey Chestnut was as strong as ever, easily out-eating his competitors by eating 57 hot dogs in five minutes. The four soldiers who ate a total of 49 hot dogs and buns slowed down considerably in the last minute and a half, but Chestnut continued at his record pace.

Chestnut said he thought he could have gotten 60, adding that his highest five-minute average so far has been 55.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 2:42 PM PDT

It’s a closer race than you’d expect, but Joey Chestnut is still running faster than those four combined with half the time left. Amazing.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 2:36 PM PDT

JoeyWatch: Joey Chestnut takes on 4 US soldiers in hot dog eating contest

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: Joey Chestnut takes on four U.S. soldiers in a hot dog eating contest that the hosts call “the sprint.” In the five-minute competition, Chestnut attempts to eat more than all four soldiers combined.

Chestnut has the table to himself while the other four are crowded on the other side, and there are plenty of frankfurters and water.

While the crowds at Fort Bliss are certainly smaller, there is a smaller audience online, with Chestnut’s YouTube livestream drawing more than 19,000 viewers.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 2:31 PM PDT

Well, the amateur pizza contest is over, with specialist Lucas White winning the most analytical tiebreaker of all: a crowd vote by cheers. Both White and specialist Chandler Pitts finished with four slices, but the result was a bit questionable because they had extra crusts (the host had to explain multiple times that it wouldn’t count unless you also had the crust).

Apparently the number of quadruple slices was much lower than the organizers had anticipated — no one finished the whole pizza, and there were a few left over at the back — but it was still a fun time.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 2:17 PM PDT

The event has begun, and it’s about as good as you’d expect from an event hastily put together in just a few weeks. The stage is set for a pizza eating contest, with six soldiers competing. Additional Sbarro pizzas are piled high behind each station.

The temperature in El Paso is currently 96 degrees, but it’s unclear how long the pizza was left out.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 2:08 PM PDT

More than 12,000 people have tuned in to Chestnut’s livestream, and the numbers continue to grow.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 2:07 PM PDT

Events for Chestnut have begun, but so far the only thing you’ll see on the livestream is a promotional video of Chestnut walking around El Paso, spending time with people at the fort and visiting the El Paso Chihuahuas, the minor league affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

JoeyWatch: Joey Chestnut’s replacement tournament is starting soon

Joey Chestnut’s Fort Bliss Meet and Greet is set to launch soon as a replacement for the hot dog eating contest following his ban from Nathan’s. The event will begin with a pizza eating contest between Fort Bliss soldiers, then move on to the main event, a hot dog eating contest between Chestnut and four other soldiers. The contest will feature “all-beef hot dogs,” although the brand has yet to be announced.

JoeyWatch: Joey Chestnut promotes his hot dog contest

Minutes before the start of the Men’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, Joey Chestnut took to social media to wish everyone happy holidays and promote his own competition. The 16-time champion will be competing against four soldiers at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, with the goal of eating more than the four soldiers combined. The competition will raise funds for military families.

Happy 4th of July!!! Getting ready to eat hot dogs with Soldiers at Fort Bliss Army Base!! Live stream starts at 5pm EST! https://t.co/rFc85ymZR0

The end of “always being the bridesmaid”

Hot water and determination are the keys to Bertoletti winning the belt today. “I wasn’t going to stop eating until the job was done,” he said.

“I get stuff that I don’t know where it came from, but I’m not complaining,” Bertoletti added in a post-contest interview.

Before today, Bertoletti was the No. 9 foodie in the world, but starting tomorrow, that will change.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 10:00 AM PDT

It’s over! Pat Bertoletti is the champion!

James Webb of Australia came in third with 52 hot dogs and buns.

Jeffrey Esper came in second with 53 hot dogs and buns.

But Pat Bertoletti of Chicago did it! The results are official! He consumed 58 hot dogs and buns, setting a new personal best and winning the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest!

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024, 9:56 a.m. PDT

We are still waiting for the official results, but if they are in, Bertoletti will likely win.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024, 9:54 a.m. PDT

Bertoletti takes the lead late on!

With one minute left! Bertoletti reaches 50 dogs and is consistently leading by 3 dogs!

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 9:53 a.m. PDT

Bertoletti has taken a two-horse lead and is holding on to it, his cheeks as full as a chipmunk’s and he’s in great form.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024, 9:51 a.m. PDT

With four minutes remaining, Wherry slowed down significantly. Webb and Bertoletti were neck and neck at the top in the final minute, but Espel came out on top in the closing stages!

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 9:49 a.m. PDT

    It’s still a competition for everyone…

With seven minutes left, everyone is still together. No one has a clear lead yet, but Bertoletti, Webb, Whaley, Esper and Yamamoto have been consistently in the top five. The winner will likely be one of them.

  • Thursday, July 4, 2024, 9:48 a.m. PDT

Top players use the “dunk and shove” method, which involves tossing dog food, along with a bun, into a liquid and then shoving it into their mouth. Most players use water, but Esper, who is ranked No. 2 in the world, seems to opt for a bright red drink (strawberry lemonade? Cherry soda? Red Gatorade?) to make it easier to eat.
