There are still more than two months until the 2024 college football season. Virginia Tech will open the season against a major rebuilding SEC team, Vanderbilt, in Nashville, Tennessee. Predictions are starting to come in for the fall, and Grant Hughes of 247Sports has predicted the win/loss numbers for every ACC team, offering an interesting take on the Hokies’ final standing.
As for Virginia Tech, Hughes projects them to finish 8-4 overall and 5-3 again in the conference. He projects losses at home to Rutgers, Georgia Tech and Clemson and away to Miami. Hughes projects Virginia Tech to finish seventh in the ACC behind Florida State, Miami, Clemson, NC State, SMU and North Carolina. In terms of the Hokies’ schedule, Miami and Clemson are the only two teams Hughes projects to finish higher than the Hokies.
“Virginia Tech is the favorite to bounce back this season after finishing 7-6 last fall. With quarterback Kyron Draughns and running back Beischul Teuthen, the Hokies are a threat to have a winning season in the ACC this year, but we’re not confident enough to write them off as a conference favorite just yet.”

Virginia Tech has many players remaining for next season and a favorable schedule without FSU, NC State, and Louisville, the three teams that beat them last season. Offensively, they should be able to put up some points, but the big question is whether they can get enough points to beat the better teams on their schedule. They have wins against Rutgers and Georgia Tech at home, and I think Clemson is a 50-50 chance, but a low-profile away game they could lose is a trip to Syracuse. Overall, they’re likely to finish the season 8-9, but will that be considered a good enough season in Blacksburg?
