The Cup team won’t compete again until Aug. 11 at Richmond Raceway, but it’s a good time to evaluate where the organization is at after 22 races this season.
Here are the Cup teams in the NBC Sports NASCAR Power Rankings:
1. Hendrick Motorsports (No. 1 in preseason standings) — The organization has won nine of 22 points races this season (40.9%). Hendrick cars have led 1,192 of 5,824 laps this year (20.5%). Hendrick Motorsports has won three or more points races this season. The organization has won six poles this year. Kyle Larson, William Byron, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman are all winners this year. Key wins include the Daytona 500 (Byron) and the Brickyard 400 (Larson). They are one of two teams with every driver winning at least one time this season.
2. Joe Gibbs Racing (3) — They have six wins this year. Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin have three wins each. Bell won at Phoenix in March and also won the Coca-Cola 600. The organization has led a series-best 2,180 of 5,824 laps this season (37.4%). JGR has a series-best 20 stage wins.
3. Team Penske (2) — After a slow start, Team Penske is gaining momentum. Team Penske has won four of the last eight points races — with Austin Cindric at World Wide Technology Raceway, Joey Logano at Nashville and Ryan Blaney at Iowa and Pocono. Team Penske also won the All-Star Race in North Wilkesboro in May with Logano. They joined Hendrick Motorsports as the only organizations with every driver winning at least one race this year.
4th place, RFK Racing (4) — Brad Keselowski won the race, and Chris Buescher qualified for the playoffs with four races remaining in the regular season. Buescher came close to winning this season, when Kyle Larson beat Buescher by 0.001 seconds at Kansas, the closest finish in series history. Keselowski and Buescher have a combined 12 top-five finishes this season.
5. 23XI Racing (5) — Tyler Reddick advanced to the playoffs with the win, while teammate Bubba Wallace became the first driver outside the playoffs with four races remaining in the regular season. Reddick is one of the series’ most in-form drivers, with eight top-10 finishes in the past nine races.
6. Trackhouse Racing (6) — Daniel Suarez qualified for the playoffs with his win at Atlanta. Ross Chastain is winless but in the playoff zone. It’s been a tough season for the team. Suarez’s eighth place at Indianapolis was Trackhouse Racing’s best result in the last six races. They’d only finished better once in the last 13 races.
7. Front Row Motorsports (10) — Michael McDowell has accounted for six of the team’s 10 top-10 finishes this season. Todd Gilliland held the record for nine consecutive top-20 finishes until an accident at Pocono forced him to finish 34th. Gilliland then finished sixth at Indianapolis.
8. Stewart-Haas Racing (8) — The organization, which will disband at the end of this season, has had four drivers finish in the top 10 19 times in the first 22 races.
9. Richard Childress Racing (7) — It has been a tough season for the team. Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon have a combined total of no wins and eight top 10s this season. In the past 10 races, an RCR car has only finished in the top 10 three times.
10. Spire Motorsports (NR) — Carson Hocevar’s season has put the team on the map. The Cup rookie has two of the team’s four top 10 finishes. He has 13 top 20 finishes. Teammates Corey LaJoie and Zane Smith have a combined 15 top 20 finishes this year.
