The NCP (SP) has agreed to contest fewer seats than its ally Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the Lok Sabha elections but the situation will be different in the state assembly elections, a party leader quoted party senior leader Sharad Pawar as saying.
Pawar held two meetings here on Friday — one with party leaders from Pune city and Pune district and another with state legislators and newly elected MPs.

City NCP (SP) leader Prashant Jagtap, who attended the inaugural meeting, said Pawar had told the gathering that the party had reduced its number of seats in the Lok Sabha elections to ensure it maintained its alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Indian National Congress.
“He suggested that the results of the state assembly elections would be changed,” Yagtap said.
The NCP(SP) leader said he also took stock of the Congress situation in Pune, Baramati, Maval and Sirur assembly constituencies.
Party leaders who attended the second meeting said Pawar urged MPs and state legislators to prepare for the state assembly elections.
Meanwhile, state NCP (SP) chief Jayant Patil told reporters that the party is yet to decide how many seats it will seek in the MVA seat-allocation talks.
As for the candidate contesting the Baramati Assembly seat, currently represented by rival NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Patil said a decision would be taken by Pawar.
Responding to a question, Anil Deshmukh, another senior NCP (SP) leader, said there were no “elder brothers” in the MVA and that “everyone was equal.”
Deshmukh alleged that there was a lot of anxiety amongst MPs from Ajit Pawar’s faction following the results of the Lok Sabha elections and some of them had been calling on Patil and other senior NCP (SP) leaders. “Let’s see what they do,” he added.
While the NCP(SP) won eight of the 10 parliamentary seats it contested, Ajit Pawar’s faction could win only one of the four seats it contested.
