New York is the latest state to jump on the digital ID bandwagon, joining a handful of states that already offer the technology to their residents. Governor Kathy Hockle recently announced the New York Mobile ID app, available for download on both the Play Store and the App Store, stating:
We are excited to offer New York residents this cutting-edge technology that provides convenience and enhanced security for mobile ID users and those who accept it. Not only will New Yorkers be able to quickly view their ID, they will also have control over the personal information they share.

Who is eligible for Mobile ID?
Any New Yorker with a valid driver’s license, learner’s permit or state-issued ID can take advantage of this new digital ID option. While the app’s current functionality is focused primarily on air travel through select airports like JFK and LaGuardia, the state’s Department of Transportation (DMV) has outlined steps for businesses to start accepting digital IDs, suggesting the technology will be used more broadly in the future.
How to Get a New York Mobile ID
Obtaining a digital ID is a simple process, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Smartphone and phone number required: You need a smartphone with a phone number registered. This number is linked to your digital ID, and you cannot use the ID on multiple phones at the same time.
- Photos Required: You’ll need to take photos of the front and back of your ID, as well as a selfie. Don’t worry if your selfie isn’t perfect; the app will use your existing DMV photo.
- Verification Process: After you submit your information, you’ll need to wait a few minutes while the DMV verifies your identity. Once this is complete, your Digital ID will be activated and ready for use.

Security and Privacy with NY Mobile ID
New York’s digital ID system is designed with security in mind. When businesses scan your digital ID, they can’t access your phone directly. Instead, you must present a QR code or use NFC to establish a secure connection and approve the data request. This gives you control over the information you share and enhances your privacy.
The Future of Digital Identity in New York
While New York Mobile ID currently has limited uses, the state has created an open system that allows businesses to adopt the technology, which could pave the way for wider adoption in the future. The list of participating airports is still small and there is no information yet on adoption by law enforcement, but the app is free and easy to use, which could encourage its use in a variety of places beyond bars and airports. The introduction of New York Mobile ID is an important step in the growing trend toward digital IDs. As the technology evolves and gains acceptance, it has the potential to streamline various processes and provide a more convenient and secure way to verify identity.
