New York Sporting Club is permanently closing its three Lee County locations.
In a WARN notice filed with the Florida Department of Commerce, the company revealed plans to close three gyms and cut 108 jobs.
The state requires businesses to submit advance notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act if they plan to lay off 50 or more employees so that affected workers can receive prompt state and local assistance.
The soon-to-close gyms, formerly known as Around the Clock Fitness, are located at 9375 Six Mile Cypress Parkway and 1755 Boy Scout Drive in Fort Myers, and 1140 Ceitus Terrace in Cape Coral. These are the only two gyms in Florida.
The company’s last business day will be August 31st, the same day the job cuts will take effect.
The layoffs include one manager and three assistant general managers.
In terms of numbers, the most affected workers are group exercise instructors (43), followed by service and sales personnel (11).
Other jobs lost include housekeepers, front desk supervisors, childcare workers and professional trainers.
Additionally, the layoffs include several staff trainers and several employees working in facilities, administration and management.

The notice, written and signed by Melissa Williams, vice president of human resources for the New York-based fitness company, did not provide a reason for the closure.
The fitness club was founded in 1973 as Town Squash Co. with the goal of “bringing the popular sport of squash to the people of New York City,” according to its website. With locations in multiple states, including New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Massachusetts, the club offers affordable, monthly memberships that are “easy on the wallet.”
New York Sports Club was once one of several fitness brands operated by Town Sports International, which was bought by investors and emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020.
Since then, the company has been working to turn itself around under new ownership and leadership.
