In just a few days, the New England Patriots will acquire the No. 3 overall pick, and there has been some recent speculation about what the team will do with that pick. De facto general manager Elliott Wolfe piqued that curiosity in last week’s pre-draft press conference by pointing out that the club was in the following situation: “Open” He added that he has had some conversations about potentially trading out picks.
Anything can happen between now and the start of the draft, but ESPN reports that barring a surprise blockbuster trade offer, the Patriots will stay at No. 3 and select a quarterback.
“You can’t win without a quarterback,” a Patriots official told ESPN.
This always felt like the most logical route for New England to go, especially after trading former first-rounder Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The club signed Jacoby Brissett in free agency and also has Bailey Zappe on the roster, but there is no solid future at the position and no player with the ceiling to draft them third.
If this report is true, the next question will center on which quarterback the team will select. LSU’s Jaden Daniels, UNC’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s JJ McCarthy are all potential options for New England at that spot in the draft, but their availability at No. 3 will depend on the Washington Commanders. will depend on what happens with the No. 2 overall pick. They are also set to take a quarterback with the pick, and most mock drafts, including the latest one from CBS Sports senior NFL draft analyst Ryan Wilson, have Daniels as their pick. So under that scenario, the Patriots would have a choice between Maye and McCarthy.
We’ll know what they actually do by this time next week.
