Kailua, Hawaii – Normal Labs, a Kailua, Oahu-based tech startup, is taking the tech world by storm with its innovative approach to hardware and climate-conscious design. Founded by two friends, Normal Labs began as a side project converting a 1968 Volkswagen bus into an electric vehicle. This sparked a passion for sustainable technology that led to the founding of Normal Labs and its non-profit counterpart, Electro Labs. Mikey learned about the venture from owner Josh Leon and engineer Ashten Akemoto.

Founded by two friends with a shared vision for sustainable technology, Normal Labs has grown to become a staple in Hawaii’s tech scene. “After converting a Volkswagen bus, we became passionate about hardware and climate-conscious design,” says Leon. The company now focuses on advanced manufacturing and software, with the aim of contributing to a greener planet.

The non-profit arm, Electro Lab, is committed to community engagement and sustainability. It focuses on converting classic cars into electric vehicles and runs mentorship and learning programs in its workshops. “We believe in giving back to the community and promoting sustainable practices,” they said.

Meanwhile, Normal Lab is pushing the boundaries of HVAC and AI technology: its flagship product, Airform, is a next-generation heat pump designed to optimize home heating and cooling through innovative technology and machine learning.

Normal Lab’s flagship office in Kailua serves as a hub for innovation and collaboration. The company is expanding rapidly and is actively recruiting engineers and business partners in Hawaii. With plans to launch a demo unit and involve customers in research and development, the company is on an exciting growth trajectory.
