CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolinians are spending less money on sports betting than they did when the system first began, according to a new report.

According to the most recent figures from the North Carolina Lottery Commission, $398,251,464 was wagered by North Carolina residents or visitors during the month of June. Account holders won $354,742,263 during the same period.

WCNC Charlotte is always asking, “Where is the money?” If you need help, contact WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.

The state has an 18 percent tax on gross gambling revenue, which means $40,302,263 was returned to the state from June gambling revenue.

Other states where sports betting has been legal for more than a year have seen similar drops in summer gambling revenue: Colorado, for example, saw just $281 million wagered in July 2023, then jump to $306 million in August, and then jump to $512 million in September when the football season began.

WCNC Charlotte’s “Where’s the Money?” series aims to level the playing field in the Carolinas by helping others and breaking down barriers. WCNC Charlotte doesn’t want its viewers to feel unfairly treated, so we’re here to help.
