This is a busy day for small business owners as the Día de los Muertos celebrations are underway. Día de los Muertos is not a time of remembrance, but a joyful annual celebration that includes home altars and traditional dishes such as “pan de muerto” to remember the dead. “At Campos Flowers and Gifts, families begin preparing more than two weeks in advance for the multi-day celebration, which aims to reunite the living and the dead and grows in size each year.” “In the last week of October, we receive so many requests that we usually sell out,” said Nadia Ramirez Mendez of Campos Flowers and Gifts, a family-owned florist. On Wednesday morning, Ramirez said she had 400 marigold bouquets ready for delivery. Florists aren’t the only ones noticing an increase in customers. Locally owned bakeries like Panaderia La Gerezana and El Trigal Bakery on Northgate Boulevard produce and sell thousands of loaves each day. “We’re taking orders and, as you know, my team is working double, double shifts,” Elle’s Luis Velasquez said. It’s a busy day for small business owners as the Día de los Muertos celebrations are underway.

Día de los Muertos is not a time of remembrance, but a joyful annual celebration that includes home altars and traditional dishes such as “pan de muerto” to remember the dead.

At Campos Flowers and Gifts, families begin preparing more than two weeks in advance for the multi-day celebration, which aims to reunite the living and the dead, and grows each year.

Nadia Ramírez Mendez from Campos said, “Usually orders for cempastil (marigolds) start around the last week of October. We have a lot of customers who ask us for it. “We do that, but they are usually sold out.” Flowers and Gifts is a family-owned florist and snack shop located in West Sacramento.

On Wednesday morning, Ramirez said she had a bouquet of 400 marigolds ready to be delivered.

Florists aren’t the only ones noticing an increase in customers. Locally owned bakeries like Panaderia La Gerezana and El Trigal Bakery on Northgate Boulevard make and sell thousands of loaves every day.

“Orders are coming in and, you know, my team is working double, double shifts,” said Luis Velasquez of El Trigal Bakery.

This Wednesday, we received an order for 5,000 traditional pastries for the Day of the Dead.

Both bakeries expect their busiest days to continue into the weekend.
