House Speaker election, third day of Congress live updates: BJP candidate Om Birla was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha again. The ruling coalition had a leading vote count, so the NDA candidate was expected to retain the position. After his victory, Om Birla was congratulated by Prime Minister Modi and Indian National Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi, who escorted him to the Speaker’s chair.
Modi said Birla’s work as a member of parliament should be an inspiration to new members of the Indian parliament. “I congratulate you on behalf of the entire parliament. I look forward to your guidance for the next five years. Your kind smile brings happiness to the entire parliament,” he said. Meanwhile, Birla’s leader Rahul Gandhi said he hoped the opposition parties would be allowed to represent the people’s voice in parliament. “The opposition parties would like to support your work. I am sure you will allow us to have a say in parliament,” he said. Birla faced off against the Birla candidate, K. Suresh, who filed his nomination after the ruling and opposition parties failed to reach an agreement last night.

Why were the NDA and the Opposition unable to reach an agreement? On Monday night, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met with Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, and other opposition leaders to seek agreement on Om Birla’s nomination. Congress sources said Kharge raised the issue of deputy speaker during the meeting and was told it could be addressed on Tuesday morning. But just before the midday deadline for speaker nominations on Tuesday, the ruling party asked for Birla’s signature on the nomination papers without mentioning the issue of deputy speaker.
