NEW DELHI: The upcoming US presidential election could be decided by the city of Omaha, Nebraska, located in the Midwest prairies and home to billionaire investor Warren Buffett, Bloomberg reports. .

The prospect has raised hopes among some Democrats that Buffett, once a big political donor, would re-enter politics to help President Joe Biden re-elect. There is.

In the past, Buffett actively supported Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. He appeared on stage with her at her rallies, criticized her opponent Donald Trump, and consistently donated to moderate Democrats in U.S. Senate races.

But Mr. Buffett has refrained from making political contributions to federal candidates in recent years, perhaps to protect his company and employees from potential backlash. The decision has gained more attention as Omaha gains importance in the upcoming presidential election. In 2022, he said, “I’ve learned that speaking out on any subject can sustainably anger far more people than it can temporarily make them happy.”

Expanding

Omaha, where Berkshire Hathaway will hold its annual shareholder meeting this weekend, is located in a congressional district won by Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2016. Since the region has one electoral vote, a win in the three northern battleground states could secure Biden’s reelection. He won the state, but not the battleground states in the South. While many Democrats believe Biden is well-positioned to win Joemaha, others see flaws in the party’s strategy.

Nebraska Democrat Preston Love Jr., who challenged Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts in November, claims the Buffett family has rejected his request for financial aid and that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has rejected his request for funding. did.

Love expressed concern that without enough investment in the state and his campaign, black voter turnout could decline. Given the high concentration of black voters in battleground districts, a decline in black voter participation could erode Biden’s victory and jeopardize Democrats’ chances of flipping Omaha’s House seat. The possibility could alarm Omaha’s wealthiest residents, who have long supported Democratic priorities such as raising taxes on the wealthy.

State Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Cleave said she expected Buffett’s support, saying, “Anytime the Buffett family is involved, it shows other donors that giving is more important.” . So it’s obvious that Buffett would like to be more involved in this cycle in a tangible way, since he brings all the good fortune. ”
