If you need to mail a package or do any banking this week, consider going before or after Thursday.
This Thursday is Independence Day, a federal holiday when banks and post offices are closed all day.
The origins of Independence Day date back to Philadelphians marking the first anniversary of American Independence Day with a “spontaneous celebration,” as described by John Adams in a letter to his daughter Abigail, according to the Library of Congress. However, the holiday did not become an annual celebration until after the War of 1812, when events such as groundbreakings for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were scheduled to overlap with Independence Day celebrations. Congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.
