NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to hold one country, one election, saying it is not possible as it would require parliamentary consent.
“What Prime Minister Modi said, he will not do, because when it comes in Parliament, he has to trust everyone, then only this will happen. “One country, one election” is not possible. Said.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi reiterated his call for a unified electoral process with “one country, one election”.
“We are now working towards one country, one election, which will strengthen India’s democracy, ensure that India’s resources deliver optimal results and move India towards realizing the dream of a developed India. India is now moving towards a one nation, one people law, a secular civil law,” he said at the National Unity Day parade in Gujarat.
Opposition parties have been vocal in criticizing the idea of holding simultaneous elections, with some calling it an “unrealistic” idea and others calling it an attempt to subvert “federalism and democracy”.
On September 18, the Federal Cabinet approved the “One Nation, One Election” proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for parliament and state assemblies. Moreover, elections to city committees and panchayats are expected to be held within 100 days.
