INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Pacers assistant coach Jim Boylen has once again joined the Team USA select staff, this time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Last summer, Boylen was one of the coaches for the Select Team ahead of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. This year, he will serve in that role again. The same staff that coached the Select Team last year will lead the team, with Orlando Magic head coach Jamal Mosley and Purdue Boilermaker coach Matt Painter as the other assistant. The Pacers’ summer league roster features two former Purdue players.
Prior to that, Boylen served as head coach of the U.S. team that qualified for the World Cup, where one of the players was former Pacers guard Langston Galloway, who is on the 2024 National Team.
Other notable players on the roster are Golden State Warriors guard Trayce Jackson-Davis from Indiana University and rising collegiate star Cooper Flagg from Duke University. According to Team USA, Flagg is the first collegiate player to join the USA Senior National Team program since Doug McDermott (who played for the Pacers last year) and Marcus Smart in 2013.
“I am excited to return to Las Vegas and once again play for the U.S. National Team,” Mosley said in a statement. “During my three years in the USA Basketball Association, I gained a vast amount of knowledge about international basketball and had the opportunity to work with some of the best players and coaches in the sport.”
Last year, Boylen was named U.S. National Team Coach of the Year. He led that World Cup qualifying team through a number of roster changes and finished the season with a 9-3 record. “I just want to congratulate Jim Boylen on being named U.S. Basketball Coach of the Year. It means a lot,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said last year. “Congratulations.”
Boylen served as a consultant at Indiana University for two years before joining the team as an assistant coach last year. He was previously head coach of the Chicago Bulls and has extensive NBA experience.
Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton will be part of the U.S. Olympic team. He has recovered from a hamstring injury and has been training in Indianapolis recently, and is excited about the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.
A select team will help train the national team in Las Vegas from July 6-8, after which Team USA will compete in several international friendlies.
