NEW DELHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has set aside a huge budget of around Rs 17 billion for renovation and upgradation of cricket stadiums in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi in preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, a key event in the cricket calendar.

The decision to allocate these funds was taken at the PCB Board meeting held in Lahore on Saturday. Besides renovating the stadium, the Board also approved a budget of Rs 240 million for the development and promotion of women’s cricket in the country.

This is a significant increase from the previous budgetary allocation of Rs 70 million and demonstrates the PCB’s commitment towards supporting and growing women’s football.

During the meeting, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi informed board members that the Champions Trophy will be played only in Pakistan and that further discussions on the tournament will take place at the ICC’s annual board meeting scheduled to be held in Colombo later this month.

The PCB convened a meeting to discuss and approve the budget for the 2024-25 season. The agenda included Pakistan’s upcoming home series against Bangladesh, England and the West Indies, as well as the three-match series before the Champions Trophy. In addition, the team has scheduled tours to Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe during the season.

Naqvi informed the Board of Governors (BOG) that work has begun on renovating the stadium, which wants to improve facilities for spectators and upgrade the venue to an A-class stadium.

The BOG has approved a huge amount of around Rs 13 billion from the development fund for carrying out the necessary work on the three stadiums, besides an additional Rs 45 billion for hosting the domestic cricket season.

During the meeting, the BOG was also informed of the Board’s decision to increase the central contract fees and salaries of women cricketers and domestic players, demonstrating the Board’s resolve to support and promote cricket at all levels.

“The budget has been increased as the PCB wants to improve the level of competition and structure in domestic and women’s cricket,” Naqvi told the board.
