NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan fast bowler and now chief national selector Wahab Riaz faced criticism for his poor fielding performance while playing for Pakistan against arch rivals India in the World Championship of Legends in Birmingham on Saturday.
Riaz, who headed the selection committee that picked Pakistan’s squad for the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup in the Americas, was mercilessly attacked by Pakistani cricket fans for dropping a simple catch.
Chasing Pakistan Champions’ impressive tally of 243/4, India Champions were struggling at 169 for 9 when Pakistan completed the formalities for a huge win. In the final over, Aamer Yamin bowled a ball that Anureet Singh launched high. Riaz got under the ball and managed to get himself in good time but ended up spilling the catch.
Riaz, the current chief selector of Pakistan, looked disappointed after dropping a simple catch and came down heavily on his poor performance on the field. Though they failed to bowl out the Indian Champions, the Pakistan Champions registered a huge 68-run victory over Yuvraj Singh’s side.
clock:
The Pakistan Cricket Board appointed Riaz as chairman of the selection committee in November last year, replacing legendary cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq, who resigned amid allegations of conflict of interest.
Under Riaz’s guidance, Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super Eight at the T20 World Cup after Babar Azam’s side lost to co-hosts USA and India in the group stages of the tournament.
