NEW DELHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is considering appointing former captain Waqar Younis as the new director of cricket, a move aimed at leveraging Younis’ vast experience to oversee cricket-related activities and decentralise administration to allow experts to handle cricketing issues.
Sources within the PCB said Naqvi plans to follow the example of other national cricket boards and hire a former player to manage the cricket affairs.
“Waqar Younis is the prime candidate to be entrusted with the overall responsibility of overseeing men’s cricket, including liaising with the two foreign head coaches, the national team selectors and the domestic cricket department,” news agency PTI quoted sources as saying.
Naqvi envisages decentralising cricket governance to allow cricket-specific issues to be handled by experts rather than just administrative officials, an approach that would include the international cricket schedule being overseen by a director of cricket.
“Naqvi does not want to centralise all power. He wants to decentralise, especially when it comes to cricket-related matters. In future, international cricket schedules and issues will also be overseen by the head of cricket,” the source added.
Currently, Naqvi is focused on preparations for the Champions Trophy and other administrative decisions within the board. He believes cricketing matters should be managed by experts and not just administrative officials. “As Union Home Minister, Naqvi believes it is fair that all matters relating to cricket should be handled by experts and not just administrative officials,” the source explained.
Waqar Younis, 52, now lives in Australia with his family and has served as Pakistan’s head coach and bowling coach. He remains committed to working with the national team and is the ideal candidate for the role of Director of Cricket.
The appointment will give Younis the power to appoint other former players as his assistants, ensuring a thorough and professional approach to the administration of cricket in Pakistan.
