Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency have formalised a new cooperation agreement—the Country Programme Framework (CPF) 2026‑31—aimed at advancing nuclear science and technology for socio‑economic development.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Raja Ali Raza Anwar and IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation Hua Liu were the signatories of the agreement signed on Wednesday.

The CPF will guide technical cooperation between Pakistan and the IAEA, focusing on several priority sectors. These include food and agriculture; human health and nutrition; climate change and water resource management; nuclear power; and radiation and nuclear safety.

Dr Anwar said the agreement reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. With assistance from the IAEA, he said, Pakistan will continue to employ modern technologies to advance in areas such as food security, health, energy, and environmental protection.

Founded in 1957, Pakistan has been an IAEA Member State for decades. The new CPF will serve as a framework for planning and deploying resources and nuclear‑technology transfers aligned with national development goals.
