Pakistan and Maldives on Wednesday agreed to boost parliamentary cooperation and strengthen people-to-people contacts during a meeting between National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Maldivian Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Sadiq said parliamentary diplomacy was vital for promoting peace and development in the region.

He stressed that sustainable peace could not be achieved without resolving the issues of Palestine and Kashmir, urging the Muslim Ummah to adopt a joint strategy to support the oppressed people.

The High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in Islamabad also shared updates about the visit on its official X (formerly Twitter) account

He further cautioned that the Israel-India nexus posed a “serious threat” to both regional and global peace.

Abdul Raheem Abdulla praised Pakistan’s “clear and consistent” stance on the issues of Palestine and Kashmir and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to expanding legislative and institutional cooperation with Islamabad.

The Maldivian delegation is currently on a five-day visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Speaker Sadiq. The programme includes meetings with political leaders, interactions with the Pakistan-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group, and visits to historical and cultural landmarks in Islamabad.

The visit is expected to open new avenues for regional collaboration while strengthening inter-parliamentary linkages and exploring cooperation in trade, education, tourism, climate change resilience, and promoting stability in the region.
