ISLAMABAD: The opposition alliance of Tehreek-e-Thailand Movement (TTAP) on Saturday announced to hold protests across the country on July 26 demanding the release of all political prisoners, including Tehreek-e-Thailand Movement (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, and restoration of “usurped powers”, The Express Tribune reported.
The TTAP leadership unanimously passed a resolution calling for the immediate release of political prisoners and demanded the establishment of a judicial commission empowered to investigate the shooting of peaceful protesters in Bannu.
The opposition coalition also called for the resignation of the ruling party and for fresh elections. Pakistani newspaper reports said the opposition coalition praised the Supreme Court’s recent decision on reserved seats.
The opposition alliance meeting was chaired by veteran politician and movement leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and was attended by PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan, Secretary General and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of Opposition in Senate Senator Shibli Faraz and PTI Central Intelligence Director Raoof Hasan.
Chairman Sunni Ittehad Council Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Chairman Majlis Wahdat Muslim Allama Nasir Abbas and JUI Shir Group leader Syed Qasim Agha also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the current political and economic situation in the country and the future course of action. They also passed a resolution calling for the release of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and all other PTI leaders and activists.
The participants said the cases against Imran Khan and other PTI leaders and workers violated the principles of law and justice. They also demanded the setting up of an independent judicial commission to probe the deaths and injuries in the firing at the Bannu Aman march.
According to a report by The Express Tribune, the protesters said that to ensure a transparent investigation into the Bannu violence, the judicial commission should be headed by a sitting judge and should be free from any external pressure.
They alleged that the incumbent interviewer and the provincial secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had failed to restore peace in the province and “both should be removed immediately.” They called on the government to immediately reverse the spike in electricity and gas prices.
Participants said Pakistanis were paying the price for the incompetence and mismanagement of an “unelected and unrepresentative government” in the form of higher prices for a range of food items, electricity and gas.
In the resolution, participants noted that the current regime has made life miserable for ordinary people through its flawed policies and brutal practices, leaving the inflation-stricken, impoverished masses with no option but to sell household items to meet daily expenses.
They urged the government to take immediate steps to curb the severe inflation and provide relief to the people by reversing the fuel price hike. Participants at the conference welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats and termed it a victory for the Constitution and the law.
They lauded the judiciary’s efforts towards restoring the supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law and democracy in Pakistan. They said the unelected and unrepresentative government of ‘Form 47’ should resign immediately and fresh elections should be held in Pakistan, reported The Express Tribune.
Pakistan held its 12th general election on February 8 amid allegations of voter fraud and ongoing suspensions of mobile phone and internet services. The PTI won the most votes in the February 8 election and dominated the results, but the party claims the vote was rigged.
