Former Pakistan President Arif Alvi on Monday responded to reports that the country’s national cricket team head coach Gary Kirsten had told players there was a lack of unity within the team.

Alvi took to Twitter to react with a pun on the situation: “For us in Pakistan there is a simple solution to this serious allegation. It is an attack on the unity and unity of Pakistan. We have information from reliable sources (ciphers) which we cannot reveal, that he is working under the direct influence of foreign interests against our ideology. PCB patron has ordered immediate action including registration of FIR in all cricket stadiums in Pakistan and his name has been listed on the ECL,” Alvi wrote before clearing up the misunderstanding.

“To Gary! Don’t worry, it’s just a pun. Do your best to save our beleaguered cricket team,” he added.

Alvi’s comments came after Pakistani media reported that Kirsten had given a stern rebuke to his team following their early exit from the T20 World Cup, accusing players of not supporting each other.

Captain Babar Azam also drew attention for his post-match comments after the win over Ireland on Sunday. With his status as captain being called into question, Babar said: “We win and lose as a team. [I am] “I’m the captain but I can’t play for every player. We have 11 players and each has a role. That’s why they came here to play in the World Cup. I don’t think we played well as a team. We need to calm down and accept that we didn’t play well as a team.”

Despite finishing the tournament with consecutive wins, Pakistan were eliminated in the first round after losing their first two matches against the USA and India.

The team went into their final group stage match against Ireland with their fate in Group A already decided.

Chasing 107 runs, Pakistan ended the match with three wickets remaining and seven balls to spare.
