Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar as Pakistan’s deputy prime minister with immediate effect, Summer TV reported.

The decision was announced through a notification issued by the Cabinet Office. Summer TV reported that this development marks a strategic move by the government leadership.

The decision was announced during Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia to attend the World Economic Forum.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar is currently Pakistan’s foreign minister. He is also included in the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

In early March, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the reconstitution of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), replacing the finance minister with the foreign minister, Geo News reported.

As stated in the notification, the President, on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, established an eight-member CCI in accordance with Article 153 of the Constitution.

The CCI, chaired by Shehbaz Sharif, comprises all four prime ministers and other board members. According to Geo News, the notification has also been confirmed to include Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and Minister Amir Muqam Safron.

The Council of Common Interests has important powers as the country’s main decision-making body. The commission adjudicates on a variety of issues, including the distribution of natural resources, particularly when disputes arise between the central government and local authorities, Geo News reports.

Dar served as Pakistan’s finance minister in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government that came to power after the ouster of Imran Khan in 2022. (ANI)
