ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has strongly protested to Germany for failing to stop protesters from entering the Pakistani Consulate premises in Frankfurt and demanded action against the “extremist group” that breached security and put the lives of consulate staff at risk.
It was unclear why protesters staged a protest outside the building on Saturday. Pakistan has not identified those taking part in the protests, but some demonstrators were seen carrying the Afghan tricolour flag.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters taking down the Pakistani flag.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said on Wednesday that Pakistan had urged Germany to take immediate steps to arrest and prosecute those involved in the incident.
Frankfurt police said several protesters on Saturday scaled the fence of the Pakistani consulate in the city and seized the flag.
Police said about 400 people were protesting outside the consulate on Saturday afternoon, when about five to 10 of them entered the consulate grounds and then reintegrated into the crowd.
Police removed other people from the premises and the demonstration ended, the release said.
Frankfurt police said an investigation was ongoing and that officers were in contact with the Pakistani consulate.
