ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended greetings to the United States on its 249th Independence Day, stating that bilateral ties are entering a “new era” of cooperation and understanding.

Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the US Embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday, he congratulated the American people and expressed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening relations between the two nations.

“On the 249th Independence Day of the United States, I extend heartfelt congratulations,” Sharif said. “We are committed to further strengthening our relations, and both countries are entering a new era of partnership, particularly in areas like trade, agriculture, education, and healthcare,” he added.

He mentioned the shared democratic values between the two nations, citing the wisdom of the US founding fathers and their alignment with the ideals of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

During his address, the prime minister also thanked US President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating a ceasefire. He praised Trump’s dedication to peace and economic growth, highlighting that Trump’s belief in promoting global peace had led to de-escalation between Pakistan and India.

“President Trump has shown, beyond a doubt, that he is a man of peace, advocating for trade, investment, and a de-escalation of conflict,” he added.

On the topic of Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war on terror, the prime minister reminded the audience of Pakistan’s struggle and the losses it had endured since the 9/11 attacks.

“We lost nearly 90,000 lives and faced economic losses of $150 billion, yet Pakistan’s resolve to fight terrorism in all its forms remains unwavering,” Sharif said.

The PM further said the four-day armed conflict with India confirmed that the Pahalgam incident was a “false flag operation” orchestrated by India. He stated that had the incident been genuine, India should have provided credible evidence to the global community.

Premier Sharif reiterated that Pakistan had offered a “transparent and credible international probe” into the attack, but the offer had been met with “aggression” by India.

He pointed to Pakistan’s restraint, despite India’s attack on Pakistan’s territory in early May, resulting in 33 Pakistani martyrs, including children and elderly civilians.

“Pakistan’s right to self-defence was exercised when six Indian planes were shot down. This was a justified response, and the international community, especially US officials, urged both sides to de-escalate,” he said.

He stressed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and de-escalation but noted India’s aggression despite Pakistan’s genuine offers to resolve the situation diplomatically.

The prime minister also acknowledged the support of Middle Eastern nations in promoting the ceasefire, expressing hope for a long-lasting peace.

He concluded by expressing his hope that Pakistan and the US would continue to build on their longstanding ties, with further growth in bilateral trade.

US Chargé d’Affaires to Pakistan Natalie Baker extended a warm welcome to guests at the celebration marking the 249th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

She praised Pakistan’s rich culture, warmth, and growing partnership with the US over the past 78 years. She highlighted shared values of liberty, equality, and self-government, noting that both nations have worked together on various fronts, including education, health, and security.

Baker emphasised the significant milestones in the US-Pakistan relationship, including military cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and joint economic ventures.

She applauded Pakistan’s role in facilitating peace between India and Pakistan and recognised the leadership of PM Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir in choosing peace. She expressed optimism for continued growth in trade, innovation, and diplomatic ties.

The US Chargé d’Affaires also celebrated the US spirit of adventure and resilience, symbolised by a country-western twist to the evening’s festivities, which included American food and music.

She concluded by reaffirming the strength of the US-Pakistan partnership and looking forward to even greater cooperation in the future. The ambassador closed with gratitude to PM Sharif and Pakistani officials, wishing for continued friendship and prosperity between the two nations.
